"Dramas which people can venture into"

Midori Mitamura has exhibited her spatial artworks widely around the world. Through fieldwork, she structures art installations using various materials such as photos, images, music, language, and found objects. Such installations express "a personal drama into which people can venture", which reflects an intertwining of our personal consciousness. Her artworks metaphorically visualize trails of awkward and endearing emotions drawn from everyone's lives, causing viewers to extend a sense of self, embracing the weakness and sentiment for other beings. Her ongoing art project "Art & Breakfast" is a site-specific project that is a combination of exhibits and breakfast meetings with visitors. Whilst staying in artist residencies, she develops ideas, collects materials, and fills up the space with numerous improvised installations and inspiring quotes responding to her critical point of view towards social and cultural issues.

Memories always keep going away from my head leaving only impressions in my mind. I make artworks by skimming only impressions from everyday afterimages that are losing those shapes. Drawn by emotions extracted from people living in foreign countries, people who lived in the past, and also my life and the people around me, I am imaging the presence of absence that are drifting around. Trails of awkward endearing emotions that are close to everyone's lives beyond any cultural differences and borders just appear there. Even records and historical facts also do not present memories but only produce impressions. Cutting out the outlines of reminiscences, the emotions that once stayed there are reflected onto the shaped silhouette as the impressions.
